"K.Balachander" The man who taught feminism as a pure paradox !

We all know about this legendary director has created his own niche in the film industry .
As acclaimed film critic and director Sudhish Kamath says .... "His thought was simple....I am not going to make a film for the star then I need the story and script should be strong ... So, they must have strong characters in them indeed strong women characters" and there came a boom of whole lot of stars who paved their own way.

Being honest.. I have not watched all his movies but i have watched a few great master pieces that were brutally honest.
All the films that i got to watch were hard hitting ...  Aval oru thodar kathai represented a woman who economically headed her family she sacrifices almost everything for her family. But still she aspires to be a wholesome domestic woman. The movie is given lot more depth by a character like phataphat JayaLakshmi. The satirical song "ennadi ulagam" is relatable even now.

Thappu Thalangal is by far the most bold film I have seen . It tells the story of a woman and man trying to get out of the misfortune(rowdyism and flesh trade) into which they were pushed due to not so pleasant circumstances . In the process the fall in love and promise to not to get back to the misfortune again but they get into the same because of the so called societal pressure.

Varumayin niram sigappu is again a masterpiece that conveys the aspiration for a idealistic world by dealing with brutal treatment of unemployment in the nation. And Sri devi is shown as a silently ambitious and an independent woman.

Ek Duje ke liye where the girl was sure about her choice of life partner irrespective of the cultural differences.

Sindhu Bhairavi where Suhasini caries the main plot of a love triangle by taking down a carnatic vocalist before an audience and winning his heart. She is shown to decide her fate and future despite being an abandoned child. But still there are two women aspiring to be a man's better half where as the man gives himself to both.

Puthu Puthu Arthangal points out the patriarchal paradox in marital bond like no other film.

Azhagan again where one man is desired by three women .

Manadhil urudhi vendum again is shown as a revised version of aval oru thodar kadhai with much more bold statements.

Parthale Paravasam was another one where one "madhava" was desired by two or rather more women. How the wife is taken aback about her husbands past relationship and how they come together after vaali's monologue scene.

He was perhaps one of the most forward thinkers in our film industry, he not just represented such unabashed mordern women but he also advocated for the same.
He showed women with brutally honest views about men & relationships.
I wish Directors now take inspiration from him and make such masterpieces that not just preach but puts you in a position where you question yourself.
Iraivi by Krthick Subburaj is one such film that i'll make sure that my next generation  watches.
KB sir... I miss you <3 .

  1. I have scanned three films of which you broached, Puthu Puthu Arthangal, Sindhu Bhairavi and Manadhil Urudhi Vendum. My gem in that is Manadhil urudhi Vendum, a very tough journey travelled by a women and inspite of encountering many hinderances from men, she stand as a root for the growth of her family. And I don`t understand the point of mentioning Puthu Puthu Arthangal here . Kindly clarify. A very good approach to the director!!!

  2. puthu puthu arthangal is perhaps the best irony to point out in KB sir's filmography.. I know its a bit of out of context here but i wanted a braniac like you to point that out... yes my clarification is.. In puthu puthu arthangal he shows a woman black mailing a public figure whom she is crushing on to marry her. And shows the few tricks played by psuedo feminists in order to just get wat they want. In 2nd half there is a woman who is independant strongly opinionated but abused by her husband. Confluence of the hero and the 2nd heroine says what their soul actually wanted . But again in climax they get back to each others abusive partners with a compromise saying all that abuse was a result of too much love.. according to me it is pati or patni vratya's romantic version. This indeed the biggest paradox...I doubt whether KB sir made any compromise over this story...
